TORONTO, September 11, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- Linda Gibbons was sentenced to the maximum of six months in prison, with 29 days yet to serve when taking into account time already in custody, as her sentencing hearing concluded at the provincial court at College Park in downtown Toronto this afternoon.
She had been found guilty of disobeying a court order at the conclusion of her trial this past Monday by Madam Justice Feroza Bhabha, in relation to her peaceful protest outside the "Morgentaler Clinic" abortion site in Toronto on June 11. That facility is protected by a "bubble zone" law that prohibits pro-life activity within a certain perimeter around the building.
Gibbons has been in and out of jail for years over her protests outside Toronto abortion clinics, during which she silently walks back and forth on the sidewalk, and offers counseling to women who come to the clinic to abort their babies.
The judge went on to administer a tongue-lashing to Gibbons at today's hearing.
"She has indicated no remorse to the court," Bhabha said angrily. "She believes in the rightness of her cause ... (but) abortions are legal. Miss Gibbons does not appreciate that it's a legal right."

The judge added a "strong message" needs to be sent to her and others that "there needs to be respect for the law" and she characterized Gibbons as "a martyr for her cause ... It's very likely that she will appear again before this court."
She said that Gibbons and others need to face the fact the democratic process allows them avenues other than law-breaking to address laws with which they don't agree. Failure to follow that process, she said, leads to "mayhem and anarchy ... What if people didn`t believe in gun control laws and decided which laws they would obey?"
She said Gibbons's continual appearance before the courts meant she was not amenable to "rehabilitation" and her conduct "must be denounced," with general deterrence emphasized in order to "enhance respect for the law." She turned down defence counsel Daniel Santoro`s submission that Gibbons be credited on a 1.5-for-1 basis for time already served and instead agreed with the Crown that credit would be only 1-for-1.
That elicited groans from one of Gibbons's supporters in the public gallery and prompted Bhabha to sharply tell him to be quiet. "We`ve heard this all before," said the man, to which Bhabha said, "If you`re bored, then leave!"
Gibbons's friend, Mary Burnie, was also watching and asked to address the court, but was told, "No, you may not!`` by the judge, who then gathered her belongings and stormed out of the room.
The blow-up carried shades of the incident last year in which fellow pro-life demonstrator Mary Wagner was denounced and attacked by Justice S. Ford Clements, whose sentence was later overturned, and inflammatory comments reprimanded, by an appeals court judge. Clements also ejected one of Wagner`s supporters from the courtroom on that occasion. A complaint to the Judicial Council of Ontario over Clements' conduct is still in the making.
Santoro has already said he will appeal Bhabha's conviction, along with two earlier ones levied by Justices Mara Beth Greene and William R. Wolski, on the bases that a court injunction protecting the Morgentaler site does not apply to Gibbons and, even if it does, her conduct does not constitute a breach of its conditions.
Outside court, Burnie, who speaks to Gibbons by telephone almost daily, said her friend`s spirits behind bars are "very good" and she continues to hold the respect of her fellow prisoners. Burnie lamented, however, that a planned joint stay at a cottage will now have to be delayed until after Gibbons`s October 10 release.

TORONTO, July 4, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In her first public appearance after 28 consecutive months in prison for silently witnessing to life in front of an abortion facility, Linda Gibbons thanked attendees at the Toronto Pro-Life forum on June 25 for their support, saying, “It’s so nice to be back in the pro-life family.”
The mild-mannered yet stalwart pro-life activist, who has spent ten of the past 17 years in prison for life, encouraged her fellow pro-lifers, saying, “We may not always win, but we always fight.”
Gibbons, who was greeted with a sustained standing ovation, told the audience of one time she was in prison watching television. “Standing there in my prison greens,” she said, she saw the news about a massive Tamil Tiger demonstration blocking the Gardiner Express Way.
She said that the Chief of Police - the same one who had had Gibbons arrested - told the media (in Linda’s words), “isn’t it wonderful - this is what it means to live in a democracy?” Overcome at the unfairness of it all, “you creep” was all she could say.
Gibbons said that one of the most frequent questions she is asked both by inmates and guards after her many years of imprisonment is, “aren’t you tired yet?” She replies, she said - borrowing a slogan from the U.S. civil rights movement - “No. I’m not tired yet.”
After applause died down she assured her listeners: “God goes before us and God will never give you something to do and not the grace to stand in it.”
Gibbons, a 63-year-old grandmother, expressed her heartfelt thanks to all those who prayed for her 89-year-old mother while she was in jail. “God takes care of our loved ones,” she said.
Explaining her willingness to suffer for the pro-life cause, Gibbons said: “The end of abortion is Armageddon, that’s the price we’ll pay for the sin of abortion if we don’t carry this battle forward.”

The awarding of the Queen's Jubilee medal to two chronic clinic harassers is a travesty. Linda Gibbons, 65, and Mary Wagner, 39, have been given medals for repeatedly attempting to invade abortion clinics and "counsel" patients not to end their pregnancies. They are regularly sent to jail for their actions. [To date, Linda has spend a total of 10 years in jail.] They are also assiduously cultivating public martyrdom.
They were awarded the medals thanks to the recommendation of Saskatchewan Conservative MP Maurice Vellacott. It's important to be clear that their mission of trespassing at abortion clinics is not an act of charity but rather is part of a long history of harassment of patients and clinic staff by organized religious fanatics across Canada and the United States.
This story may seem like small potatoes, only affecting a limited demographic. No doubt it could easily be dismissed as just a "women's issue." But all Canadians, no matter what their personal views on abortion, should be concerned. The rewarding of criminal harassment is not something anyone should take lightly, even among their fellow Roman Catholics, whose default impulse may be to support "pro-life" activism.
We've gone through a lot of blood, sweat and tears to create a free society for all to enjoy [ Where is the enjoyment of the unborn who are denied life? ]. We have freedom of opinion and the right to control our own lives. Our rights as citizens to respect and privacy, to bodily integrity and dignity are well established. We would not have it any other way. I know, just as a human being, that I want control over my own body. I can't fathom the idea that anyone would want to do that to half the human race [ What about those innocent members of the human race growing in the womb? ].
The anti-choice [ ! I resent this label - The problem is that woman are not given the information they need to make an informed choice and they are not informed of the options and support they can access if they chose to allow their baby to live.] don't seem to understand that they are enjoying the exact same freedom to make moral choices that the pro-choice side demands. They are free to not have abortions, not to be coerced, and to control their own bodies. Pro-choicers by definition support everyone's rights to make fundamental life decisions freely [But most women are not making informed decisions, and options are not explained of offered.] without fear of consequence [But women are not being informed of the emotional ramifications to themselves and the reality of post abortion depression and trauma] . I absolutely support their right to feel that for them, abortion is immoral, and to govern their own lives accordingly.
The anti-choice fail to see that if they succeed in somehow re-criminalizing abortion, they will be endangering their own rights. For if one state intrusion into your private life is ok, then how about another? And another? [Wake UP ! Both Canada and the US are already becoming police states. People fight for euthanasia and they are seriously speaking about allowing parent to kill their children up to 3 years old - And wake up - the New World Order / Agenda 21 folks want to drastically cut the population of planet down to 500 million (we now have 7 trillion people) and they do not care how this goal is met! So tell me which slippery slope should we be concerned about ? - I guarantee you that you are NOT among the few elite who will be allowed to live - Follow links directly below.]

There truly is no telling where fanatics might not pry and try to control, what savage punishments they might feel justified in meting out to any citizens they feel have fallen short of their vision of personal morality [ A true Christian loves and forgives and will offer options and assistance to those who need assistance. They will even love and enfold those who have aborted their babies. Many anti-abortionists have been parent (male or female who aborted their children in the past or worked in abortion clinics. They understand ! ] . It has happened before and could easily happen again. Enshrining human rights and freedoms in law is a deliberate attempt to thwart that kind of potential tyranny.
Our rights aren't something that we each file away and pull out when we need them; they are a sea that we swim in, an environment that we all need to live happy, fruitful and safe lives. Restricting women's rights will damage everybody's rights. A recent study by the Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organization [ This is a UN organization - They are the ones pushing Agenda 21 and drastic population cut/kill at any cost !] shows clearly that the legality of abortion barely affects the number of abortions actually performed [ What! Check the stats for abortion numbers before and after it was legalized in Canada and the US.] -- but criminalizing abortion makes it significantly more dangerous for the women involved. If the anti-choice got their way, they would be putting women's lives at risk, they'd endanger everyone's civil rights, and they wouldn't even be changing the fact of abortion in society.
Rather than waging a war on abortion providers, the anti-choice need to rethink their approach entirely. They need to devote their resources and the compassion they claim motivates them to creating an environment where women facing an unplanned pregnancy, who don't feel abortion is an option for them, can have the best possible emotional and financial supports for themselves and their babies.
So the ongoing harassment at clinics, threats and lurking dangers that abortion providers face is both pointless and immoral. Linda Gibbons and Mary Wagner insist that they have every right to bother people about their intimate lives, their sexuality, their most personal decisions. This is unacceptable in a free society. Moreover, they are attempting to legitimize that very approach itself. I doubt most people would like the idea that strangers, armed with nothing but their own fanaticism, would be free to barge into their private lives.
I know that politically progressive people already oppose this. What I find mind-boggling is that conservatives, always demanding less government interference, don't fight this nonsense tooth and nail. They should take another look at Vellacott and his friends in the anti-choice Parliamentary caucus, and see that they represent an ongoing threat to all Canadians' civil liberties. [ What this person fails to see is that pro-life advocates are for liberty and life - the slippery slope mentioned in the comments above is very quickly engulfing us all. The elite powers who are pushing this New World Order are not asking our permission to do so - it is being imposed on us and our politicians are being threatened and blackmailed to push this forward. - Wake up - Your liberties are already actively being removed! And they want YOU dead.]
